CALL FOR TUTORIALS -- EASSS 2007 !!! The ninth edition of the European Agent Systems Summer School (EASSS'07) will take place at Durham University, UK 27-31 August 2007 http://www.dur.ac.uk/durham.agents007/EASSS07/ Researchers and lecturers in the field of autonomous agents and multi-agent systems are invited to submit a proposal for a state-of-the-art course in the ninth edition of the European Agent Systems Summer School. Like its very successful predecessors, EASSS 2007 aims to offer a valuable forum for knowledge exchange between various research groups in this field for the benefit of students and researchers at both beginner and advanced level. The success of this summer school is essential not only for the mutual benefit of research groups, but also in forming future generations of researchers to maintain the excellence of Agents research and development in Europe. A typical course has 4 hours in total, but variations are possible. Courses should be broad enough to provide a general introduction to the chosen topic, but it should also cover the most important contributions in depth. Courses are expected to take a wider perspective than one specific approach practised by an individual or group. For an impression, the courses given in 2001 are collected in a volume of Springer's LNAI series (No 2086), and programmes of previous editions of EASSS can be found via the above webpage. The summer schools attract about 100 students each year. We intend to give a modest contribution towards tutors' expenses by providing free accommodation, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but each tutor is encouraged to book and pay for his/her own travel to Durham. There are cheap flights from Newcastle to various destinations in Europe. Tutors are encouraged to submit a 1-page course proposal including: the topic and its importance for the field, intended audience and their required background knowledge, outline of the topics to be presented, how the course material will be prepared, the tutors and their experience, level of the course (beginners/advanced), duration (2, 6, or, preferably, 4 hours), and any special equipment requirements. Proposals will be evaluated based on the importance and quality of the topic description, the quality of the presentation material, and the teaching ability of the proposed speakers. Deadline for proposals: February 5, 2007 Notification: March 19, 2007 material for reader (< 26 pp) July 2, 2007 Submissions should be sent to Mehdi Dastani (mehdi at cs.uu.nl). Various kinds of correspondence relations that may hold between logic programs or between nonmonotonic theories have been analysed and shown to be of practical relevance for theory or program transformation, optimisation and modularity. Several systems for verifying such relations have been implemented. Different types of knowledge representation and reasoning tasks have begun to be explored in this context, such as abductive and inductive reasoning, causal reasoning, preference-based reasoning or reasoning about updates. In the field of KRR more generally one notes an increased interest in intertheory relations that are relevant for ontologies, eg to describe modular ontologies or equivalences between ontologies or their parts. It may therefore be of interest to combine work in this area with work on equivalences between nonmonotonic rules. We are also interested in new results on equivalences between different ontology languages proposed for the Semantic Web, particularly in combinations with (nonmonotonic) rules. Frameworks for study might therefore include e.g. DL-programs or hybrid knowledge bases that provide combinations of a classical or description logic KB with logic programming rules. The scope of the workshop covers all aspects of the study and application of intertheory relations in the LPNMR area. In particular it welcomes contributions that * extend the catalogue of useful relations or provide novel characterisations * characterise relations wrt different approaches to LP and NMR * examine specialised reasoning tasks, eg planning, diagnosis, explanation, reasoning about actions, reasoning about ontologies * explore practical applications * present system descriptions and comparisons Workshop topics --------------- Workshop topics include, but are not limited to: * logical characterisations * applications * computational complexity * implementation issues * benchmarks and system comparisons * relations to datalog and database theory * relations to ontologies and Semantic Web languages Submission and Presentation Format ---------------------------------- Papers must be written in English and we encourage both original research papers or system descriptions. Submissions must not exceed twelve (12) pages including title page, references and figures, and must be formatted according to the Springer LNCS/LNAI authors' instructions, but also shorter papers will be considered. At present, ASP is seen as the computational embodiment of non-monotonic reasoning incorporating techniques of databases, knowledge representation, logic and constraint programming. ASP has become an appealing tool for knowledge representation and reasoning and thanks to the increasing efficiency of the implementations of ASP solvers, the field has now started to tackle many industrially-relevant applications. Writing complex programs in any language is not an easy task, with ASP being no exception. Most of the modern popular programming languages have an abundance of tools and development methodologies to facilitate and improve the coding process. Given the differences in for example language design, execution, and application domains for languages such as Java and C++, the existing methodologies and tools that are available are mostly not suitable for ASP. Therefore development tools and software engineering methodologies specifically designed for ASP are required. This workshop aims to bring together researchers who are currently working on or are interested in the development of dedicated tools, techniques, and methodologies to facilitate the development of answer set programs. TOPICS Authors are invited to submit original research or system description papers on software engineering tools or techniques for answer set programming. The list of topics of interest includes but is not limited to: * Modelling tools * (Domain-specific) front and/or back-ends * Methodologies * Debuggers * (Graphical) User Interfaces * Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) * Software engineering metrics SUBMISSIONS Submitted articles will undergo peer-review. Please forward this mail to anyone interested.] ------------------------------------------------------------ Multimedia Tools and Applications - Journal of Web Semantics Joint Special Issue on "Semantic Multimedia" CALL FOR PAPERS http://samt2006.org/mtap.html http://samt2006.org/jows.html ------------------------------------------------------------ The objective of this special issue is to collect and report on recent high quality research that narrows the large disparity between the low-level descriptors typically computed automatically from multimedia content and the richness and subjectivity of semantics in user queries and human interpretations of audiovisual media i.e. the so called Semantic Gap. Research in this area is important because of the overwhelming amount of information available as multimedia for the purpose of entertainment, security, education, cultural or technical documentation and the very limited understanding of the semantics of such data sources and, hence, the limited ways in which they can be accessed by users. In spite of the multitude of such activities, there is a lack of appropriate outlets for presenting high-quality research in the area of "Semantic Multimedia". This joint special issue is addressed to two research communities and two journals, Multimedia Tools and Applications (http://www.springer.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-0-70-35538244-0,00.html) and Journal of Web Semantics (http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/671322/description). The former is addressed to those members of the multimedia community interested in extending their multimedia analysis, indexing, retrieval etc. methods by leveraging Semantic Web technologies, i.e. core multimedia research employing semantics. The latter will cater towards those members of the Semantic Web community interested in applying their semantic technologies to the field of multimedia. This means that it targets core semantic web research with multimedia as its field of application. High quality contributio! ns addressing related theoretical and practical aspects are expected in both. Topics of interest ------------------ Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Integration of multimedia processing and Semantic Web technologies * Multimedia ontologies and infrastructures * Knowledge assisted multimedia data mining * Knowledge based inference for semi-automatic semantic media annotation * Integration of content-based image/video analysis with natural language and speech processing * Revelance feedback for finding semantics * Semantic-driven multimedia indexing and retrieval * Metadata management for multimedia * Semantic Browsing of large multimedia archives * Scalable, semantic-driven multimedia content adaptation and summarization * Semantic interfaces and semantic personalisation for interaction with large multimedia repositories * Semantics-driven multimedia presentation generation * Semantics-aware media engineering involving content, users, and networks * Standards bridging the multimedia and knowledge domains Submission Procedure -------------------- Authors have the possibility to submit specifically to either the Journal of Web Semantics or to Multimedia Tools and Applications. However it is also possible to submit to this joint double special issue and leave it to the editors to decide about acceptance for one of the two journals. Prospective contributors are invited to submit papers in A4/US letter, single column, double space format, up to 30 pages long including figures, tables and references. Authors should submit their manuscripts in pdf format online at http://samt2006.org/submission_mtap_jows.html indicating their submission target as "MTAP", "JoWS" or "BOTH". Camera-ready papers will have to conform to the style of the target journal. The first attempts showed how argumentation results in a very natural way of conceptualizing Commonsense Reasoning, appropriately reflecting its defeasible nature. Further work in the KR&R community has shown that argumentation provides a useful perspective for relating different nonmonotonic formalisms. More recently, argumentation has been revealed as a powerful conceptual tool for exploring the theoretical foundations of reasoning and interaction in Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. This workshop will represent an opportunity for exchanging ideas on the fundamental theoretical basis and the design and implementation of argument-based systems including semantics, proof theory, applications to epistemic and practical reasoning, and the comparison of those systems with other types of nonmonotonic reasoning. = Topics = We solicit unpublished papers that present work on argumentation and nonmonotonic reasoning. We will privilege articles who emphasize connections between them. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following: -> argumentation theories and logical foundations -> argumentation and logic programming -> formal models of argument -> semantics of argumentation -> operational semantics and execution models of argumentation systems -> argumentation and commonsense reasoning -> argumentation for practical reasoning and deliberation -> argumentation tools and applications -> argumentation for reasoning in multiagent systems -> argumentation dialogues in multiagent systems -> nonmonotonic reasoning in multiagent systems -> argumentation for legal reasoning -> argumentation and nonmonotonic reasoning in the semantic web -> implementations of argumentation systems = Submissions = We welcome and encourage the submission of high quality, original papers, which have not been accepted for publication nor are currently under review for another journal or conference. Papers should be written in English, formatted according to the Springer LNCS style ( http://www.springer.com/comp/lncs/Authors.html ), and they should not exceed sixteen (16) pages including title page, figures, references, etc. = Proceedings and post-workshop publications = A printed volume with the proceedings will be available at the workshop. The proceedings of ArgNMR are also planned to form the basis for publishing a post-workshop volume, and/or a special issue of an international journal, subject to appropriate quality. = Programme Committee = Leila Amgoud, IRIT-CNRS Toulouse, France Grigoris Antoniou, FORTH-ICS, Greece Pietro Baroni, U Brescia, Italy Trevor J. However, most of the treatments of knowledge and belief make strong and idealised assumptions about the reasoners. For example, traditional epistemic logic say that agents know all logical consequences of their knowledge. Similarly, logics of action and strategic interaction are usually based on game theoretic models which assume perfect rationality. Models based on such assumptions can be used to describe ideal agents without bounds on resources such as time, memory, etc, but they fail to accurately describe non-ideal agents which are computationally bounded. The workshop aims to provide a forum for discussing possible solutions to the problem of formally capturing the properties of knowledge, belief, action, etc. of non-idealised resource-bounded agents. TOPICS Topics include, but are not limited to, logical models of: * logically non-omniscient agents in general * explicit knowledge and belief * algorithmic knowledge * temporal logics of reasoning * active logics * knowledge and belief of reasoners with bounds on reasoning time * knowledge and belief of reasoners with bounded memory * knowledge and belief of reasoners with other resource bounds (e.g. bandwidth, sensing limitations) * other attitudes, such as desire, intention, etc., under bounded resources * limited awareness * paraconsistency * rational choice under bounded resources * games under bounded resources, e.g., o games with bounded recall o resource bounded reasoning about the structure of the game o incomplete information due to bounded resources IMPORTANT DATES Submission deadline: 1 June 2007 Notification of acceptance: 6 July 2007 Camera-ready: 20 July 2007 Workshop: 3-4 September 2007 PUBLICATION Accepted papers will appear in pre-proceedings published by MALLOW. It is easy to justify interest in hybrid logic on the grounds of applications as the additional expressive power is very useful. In addition, hybrid-logical machinery improves the behaviour of the underlying modal formalism. For example, it becomes considerably simpler to formulate modal proof systems, and one can prove completeness and interpolation results of a generality that is not available in orthodox modal logic. The topic of the HyLo workshop of 2007 is not only standard hybrid-logical machinery like nominals, satisfaction operators, and the downarrow binder, but generally extensions of modal logic that increase its expressive power. The workshop HyLo 2007 will be relevant to a wide range of people, including those interested in description logic, feature logic, applied modal logics, temporal logic, and labelled deduction. The workshop continues a series of previous workshops on hybrid logic, most recently the LICS-affiliated HyLo 2006 (http://hylomol.ruc.dk/HyLo2006/). The workshop aims to provide a forum for advanced PhD students and researchers to present and discuss their work with colleagues and researchers who work in the broad subject areas represented at ESSLLI. For more general background on hybrid logic, and many of the key papers, see the Hybrid Logics homepage (http://hylo.loria.fr/). SUBMISSION DETAILS: We invite the contribution of papers reporting new work from researchers interested in hybrid logic. Papers should not exceed 10 pages including references. A paper must be submitted as a PDF file and the font size must be at least 10 pt when printed on A4 paper. It is recommended that the LaTeX "article" style is used. Please use the HyLo 2007 submission page (http://www.easychair.org/HyLo2007/), handled by the EasyChair conference system, to submit papers. The accepted papers will appear in the workshop proceedings published by ESSLLI. One author for each accepted paper must attend the workshop in order to present the paper. It is planned to publish revised versions of the accepted papers in a special issue of Journal of Logic, Language and Information. WORKSHOP FORMAT: The workshop is part of ESSLLI and is open to all ESSLLI participants. It will consist of five 90-minute sessions held over five consecutive days in the first week of ESSLLI. There will be 2 or 3 slots for paper presentation and discussion per session. On the first day the workshop organizers will give an introduction to the topic. INVITED SPEAKERS: Balder ten Cate (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) Ian Hodkinson (Imperial College, UK) PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Carlos Areces (INRIA Lorraine, France) Patrick Blackburn (INRIA Lorraine, France) Thomas Bolander (Technical University of Denmark) - Co-Chair Torben Braüner (Roskilde University, Denmark) - Chair Mai Gehrke (New Mexico State University, USA) Valeria de Paiva (PARC, USA) Jørgen Villadsen (Technical University of Denmark) IMPORTANT DATES: Deadline for submissions: March 8, 2007 Notification of acceptance: April 21, 2007 Preliminary programme: April 24, 2007 ESSLLI early registration: May 1, 2007 Deadline for final versions: May 17, 2007 Final programme: June 21, 2007 Workshop dates: 6 - 10 August, 2007 LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS: All workshop participants including the presenters will be required to register for ESSLLI. Doctoral Consortium The Doctoral Consortium (DC) on Logic Programming is the third doctoral consortium to be offered as part of ICLP conference series. The DC builds on the experience of the previous successful consortiums (held in Sitges, Spain and in Seattle, WA) during ICLP-05 and ICLP-06. The DC is designed for doctoral students working in areas related to logic and constraint programming, who are planning to pursue a career in academia. The DC also considers applications from Master's students pursuing projects in logic programming and interested in entering a doctoral program. The Doctoral Consortium aims to provide students with an opportunity to present and discuss their research directions and to obtain feedbacks from peers as well as world-renown experts in the field. The Doctoral Consortium will also offer invited speakers and panels discussions. More information can be found at http://www.cs.nmsu.edu/~epontell/DC2007/. Conference Venue ICLP 2007 will be held in the city of Porto, second largest in Portugal. Porto is located by the Douro river and the Atlantic, has a truly unique appearance with many striking bridges, a historic center classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, a new House of Music by Rem Koolhaas and a nice Museum of Modern Art (Museu de Serralves). Porto is also well known for the much celebrated Port wine grown in the Douro valley. The conference will feature a cruise in the Douro river along with other optional tours. SABRE will mainly focus on Software, Agents, Multi-agent Systems, Grid-computing, Service-oriented Architectures, Business Process and Services Computing, Self-Organization, and Autonomous Systems. It, especially, will also concentrate on the relationships and overlaps between these areas. Moreover, as can already be implied from the title of the conference, SABRE will not only concentrate on research but will especially also bridge the gap between research and industry by providing a fertile platform for business-oriented topics and presentations. Thus, we especially encourage applied researchers, users, and industry to submit contributions to one of our events. SABRE is a transparent event what especially also means that every participant of an individual conference is allowed to go to whatever session (s)he wants to go, whether it belongs to the specific conference of her/his choice or not. However, in contrast with other similar initiatives, participants to the symposium will not only receive constructive comments with respect to topic-specific research issues; they will also be assisted in formulating a coherent research narrative for their doctoral work. In particular, students will be asked to submit an extended abstract, structured in accordance to a pre-defined template, which has been designed to highlight the key methodological components required for a sound research narrative. Generally speaking, priority will be given to 1st/2nd year PhD students (because they are still in the process of defining the scope of their research). However, all PhD students are welcome and encouraged to apply. Just as in 2006 (http://www.l3s.de/kweb/kwepsy2006/), the 2nd Symposium will be co-located with the 4th Annual European Semantic Web Conference ESWC2007. It is scheduled for the 6th of June 2007. Important Dates (GMT) ------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Deadline for paper submissions: March 2, 2007 -- Notification of acceptance: April 2, 2007 -- Camera-ready versions: April 13, 2007 -- Symposium: June 6, 2007 Call for Contributions ------------------------------------------------------------------ Though organized under the umbrella of KnowledgeWeb (http://knowledgeweb.semanticweb.org/), the symposium is open to all PhD students carrying out research on topics related to the Semantic Web. The applicants are required to send an extended abstract of their doctoral work, which should address the following aspects: -- Describe the research problem of the PhD thesis and argument its relevance for the Semantic Web area. -- Describe the state of the art, emphasizing the need for improvement and the feasibility of their approach. -- Summarize the expected contributions and outline the real-world use cases (applications, target audience) which will mainly benefit from their work. -- Sketch the research methodology that they have adopted (or are planning to adopt), in particular the approach to evaluating/validating the results. -- Describe the proposed approach, clearly differentiating between the results achieved so far, the remaining work and the (planned) evaluation. -- Compare and contrast their approach with other existing approaches, in particular highlighting the shortcomings of other approaches and the way they are dealt with in the present work. -- Conclude with a summary and an outline of the planned future work. Papers should not exceed 5 pages. They should be formatted according to the LNCS format (http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0) and submitted as PDF documents per mail to Elena Simperl simperl at inf.fu-berlin.de. Applicants should also specify how long they have worked on their doctoral work. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two members of the scientific advisory board. The submissions will be reviewed against the following criteria (in this order): -- Conformance of the submitted abstract to the given template. -- Novelty and originality of the research work. -- Rigorousness and scientific soundness of the overall approach and of the results so far. -- Clarity of the presentation. -- Relevance of the work with respect to the Semantic Web field. The selected participants will be given the opportunity to open their work up to discussion in front of other students and an expert audience (either in a regular presentation session or in a poster session, this will be decided by the reviewers). Each accepted contribution will be assigned to a scientific advisor, who will provide extended feedback to the presented research achievements and to the accuracy of the applied methodology, and will attend the symposium. A template for structuring the paper presentations will be provided after the final program of the symposium has been set up. Topics ------------------------------------------------------------------ Topics of interest to the symposium include (but are not restricted to): -- Ontology management (e.g. creation, evolution, evaluation) -- Ontology alignment (e.g. mapping, matching, merging, alignment, mediation and reconciliation) -- Ontology learning -- Ontology population -- Business-oriented aspects of ontology engineering (costs, business measurements, cost benefit analysis) -- Semantic Web-based multimedia -- Semantic annotation of data -- Semantic Web trust, privacy, security and intellectual property rights -- Semantic Web representation and query languages -- Reasoning on the Web (e.g. scalability, fuzziness, distribution) -- Searching, querying, visualizing, navigating and browsing the Semantic Web -- Personalization and user modelling -- User interfaces and Semantic Web -- Semantic Grid and Middleware -- Semantic Web Services (e.g. description, discovery, invocation, composition) -- Semantic Web Applications for knowledge management, eBusiness, eCulture, eGovernment, eHealth, eLearning, eScience etc. -- Database technologies for the Semantic Web -- Semantic interoperability -- Semantic data integration -- Semantic Web mining Organisation Committee ------------------------------------------------------------------- Elena Simperl (Free University of Berlin, Germany) Joerg Diederich (L3S Hannover, Germany) Guus Schreiber (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands) Scientific Advisors (provisional list) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Alain Leger (France Telecom, France) Anupriya Ankolekar (University of Karlsruhe, Germany) Axel Polleres (DERI Innsbruck, Austria) Carole Goble (University of Manchester, UK) Daniel Olmedilla (University of Hannover, Germany) Diana Maynard (University of Sheffield, UK) Dieter Fensel (DERI Innsbruck, Austria) Elena Simperl (Free University of Berlin, Germany) Enrico Franconi (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy) Enrico Motta (The Open University, UK) Fabien Gandon (INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, France) Fausto Giunchiglia (University of Trento, Italy) Frank van Harmelen (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands) Guus Schreiber (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands) Heiner Stuckenschmidt (University of Mannheim, Germany) Holger Wache (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands) Ilya Zaihrayeu (University of Trento, Italy) Jeff Z. The success of the previous events shows that RCRA is becoming a major forum for exchanging ideas and proposing experimentation methodologies for algorithms in artificial intelligence. * ________________________________________________________________ * DATE 5-6 July 2007 VENUE Rome, CNR (National Research Council) AIMS AND SCOPE Many problems in Artificial Intelligence show an exponential explosion of the search space. Although stemming from different research areas in AI, such problems are often addressed with algorithms that have a common goal: the effective exploration of huge state spaces. Many algorithms developed in one research area are applicable to other problems, or can be hybridised with techniques in other areas. Artificial Intelligence tools often exploit or hybridise techniques developed by other research communities, such as Operations Research. In recent years, research in AI has more and more focussed on experimental evaluation of algorithms, the development of suitable methodologies for experimentation and analysis, the study of languages and the implementation of systems for the definition and solution of problems. Scope of the workshop is fostering the cross-fertilisation of ideas stemming from different areas, proposing benchmarks for new challenging problems, comparing models and algorithms from an experimental viewpoint, and, in general, comparing different approaches with respect to efficiency, problem modelling, and ease of development. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Experimental evaluation of algorithms for o knowledge representation o automated reasoning o planning o scheduling o machine learning o model checking o boolean satisfiability (SAT) o constraint programming o constraint satisfaction o quantified boolean formulae and quantified constraints o modal logics o logic programming o disjunctive logic programming o temporal reasoning * Definition and construction of benchmarks * Experimentation methodologies * Metaheuristics * Algorithm hybridisation * Static analysis of combinatorial problems * Languages and systems for definition and solution of problems * Comparisons between systems and algorithms * Application experiences Publications showing negative results are welcome, provided that the approach was original and very promising in principle, the experimentation was well-conducted, the results obtained were unforeseeable and gave important hints in the comprehension of the target problem, helping other researchers to avoid unsuccessful paths. This is expected to be a world-class forum bringing together both computer and domain scientists and practitioners, featuring papers reviewed by the high-caliber program committee we have assembled as well as keynote/invited talks and panel/tutorial discussions on hot topics. The papers will be published by IEEE CS Press (hardcopy and online). Please encourage your students and colleagues to submit 5-page extended abstacts (deadline: March 10, 2007). Details are in the CFP below. Program Co-Chairs: Phil Bourne, University of California, San Diego Shamkant B. Navathe, Georgia Institute of Technology Sushil K. Prasad, Georgia State University ----------------------- Call for Papers The Ist IEEE International Workshop on Service Oriented Technologies for Biological Databases and Tools (SOBDAT 2007) http://www.cs.gsu.edu/~hipc/sobdat07/ In conjunction with ICWS/SCC 2007 9-13 July 2007, Salt Lake City, Utah Important Dates: 5-Page Extended Abstract Submission Deadline: March 10, 2007 Notification Deadline: April 15, 2005 Camera-Ready Paper Due (8 pages): May 1, 2007 Integration of data sources and tools, and performing computations on them is one of the key problems for using the data from experimental biology today. However, these resources are highly diverse in nature in terms of representation, data formats, and computer systems and are distributed across the network. Although this broad spectrum of information is accessible over the Web, each data source comes with its own structure, semantics, data formats, names, concepts, and access methods. Currently, the burden falls on the scientist to manually (via programs) convert between the data formats, resolve conflicts, integrate data, and interpret results in order to make viable use of this information. This workshop will provide a forum to bring together researches and practitioners working to solve these challenges in biological data and tools using service oriented technologies. Submission Instructions: The SOBDAT 2007 invites submission of high quality papers by the submission deadline of March 10, 2007. Original unpublished manuscripts in IEEE format (pdf or doc file) should be submitted electronically at ICWS 2007 Workshop Management System (http://www.servicesscience.org/scw07/). All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. All accepted papers will be published as a single volume of proceedings encompassing all the workshops (held in conjunction with ICWS-2007) to be published by IEEE Computer Society and will also be available online in the IEEE explorer digital library. Submissions are specially invited on the following topics, but the scope is not limited to these. We also encourage the submission of survey and case study papers. Topics: - Challenges, solutions, and methodologies in providing web services interfaces to biological data sources and tools - Methodologies for data transformation and normalization including transformation of raw data into information and knowledge - Design, management, and governance for information infrastructures, including information flow, adaptive evolution, and interoperability - Development of algorithms and data structures for analysis of biological information - Querying and query optimization against biological sources - Ontology based data and tool integration - Semantic Web technologies and formalisms for biological data and applications - Web Service based biological workflow configuration and deployment systems - Web interfaces for defining, accessing, and executing workflows - Dynamic discovery of suitable of biological resources - Data exchange rules among data sources and tools - Peer-to-peer based architectures for data and tool integration - Case studies in application of service oriented techniques to solve data integration issues - Handheld based monitoring of biological workflows, and the role of pervasive computing Workshop Organization Program Co-Chairs: Phil Bourne, University of California, San Diego, USA (bourne at sdsc.edu) Shamkant B. The work on such systems integrates many technologies and concepts in artificial intelligence and other areas of computing as well as other disciplines. Over recent years, the agent paradigm gained popularity, due to its applicability to a full spectrum of domains, from search engines to educational aids to electronic commerce and trade, e-procurement, recommendation systems, simulation and routing, to cite only some. Computational logic provides a well-defined, general, and rigorous framework for studying syntax, semantics and procedures for the various tasks of individual agents, as well as for the interaction and integration amongst agents in multi-agent systems. It also provides tools, techniques and standards for implementations and environments, for linking specification to implementation, and for verification of properties of individual agents, multi-agent systems and their implementations. In this workshop we aim to bring together researchers from all these areas to discuss and present their work. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Topics: All with focus on agents or multi-agent systems logical foundations extensions of logic programming modal logic approaches logic-based programming languages non-monotonic reasoning decision theory hypothetical reasoning and learning knowledge and belief representation and updates operational semantics and execution agent models model checking algorithms, tools, and applications for (multi-)agent logics semantics of interaction and agent communication languages distributed constraint satisfaction temporal reasoning distributed theorem proving logic-based implementations specification and verification of formal properties Submissions We invite submissions of 2 kinds: 1. LOCATION Plze (Pilsen) is located in Western Bohemia on the confluence of four rivers. With 170 thousand inhabitants it is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic and an important industrial, commercial, cultural, and administrative center. Plze is well known for its brewing tradition. The trademark Pilsner-Urquell penetrated all over the world thanks to the traditional recipe, high quality hops and good wells. Beer lovers will also appreciate a visit to the Brewery museum or the Brewery itself. Apart from its famous beer, Plze has a lot of hidden treasures in its core. Plze can pride itself on the second largest synagogue in Europe. The old city center is dominated by a 13th-century Gothic church which features the highest tower in Bohemia (102.34 m). It is possible to go up the stairs and admire the panorama. Not far from the church is a splendid Renaissance Town Hall from 1558 and plenty of pleasant cafes and pubs. Plze has also a beautiful historical underground under the city center there are 25 km of tunnels. Visitors can pass through the most beautiful part of thislabyrinth. It is also recommended to visit the zoo having the second largest space for bears in Europe and keeping the Komodo dragons - large lizards existing in only a few zoos in the world. In the neighborhood of the city there are castle Radyn and hunting-seat Kozel. St. Peter's Rotunda in Star Plzenec was built in the 10th century. The University of West Bohemia in Plze provides a variety of courses for both Czech and international students. It is the only institution of higher education in this part of the country which prepares students for careers in engineering (electrical and mechanical), science (computer science, applied mathematics, physics, and mechanics), education (both primary and secondary), economics, philosophy, politology, archaeology, anthropology, foreign languages, law and public administration, art and design. GETTING THERE The city has an access from the D5 highway connecting Prague (Praha) with Germany. Plze has a very good bus and train connections with the capital Prague (takes about 1 - 1.5 hour). From the international airport Prague - Ruzyn you can reach Plze by frequent public transport in 1.5 - 2 hours. SOCIAL EVENTS The international conference will also include social events and trips i.e. visit of brewery and city sightseeing. CALL FOR PAPERS New Conference Theme on "Service Intelligence and Service Science" for 6th International Conference on Machine Learning and Cybernetics August 19-22, 2007, Hong Kong Conference web site: http://www.icmlc.com The global economy and organizations are evolving to become service-oriented. There are recently more and more research works on services provision, particularly the application of cybernetics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Beyond the Service Oriented Architecture, IBM proposed an emerging research and curriculum area called Service Science to the industry and academia, which is a combined discipline of technologies including cybernetics, computer science, industrial and systems engineering, management science, operations research, marketing, contracts and negotiations; as well as culture transformation and integration methods based on beliefs, assumptions, principles, and values among organizations and humans. The creation, operation, and evolution of such research and practice raise concerns that range from high-level requirements and policy modeling through to the deployment of specific implementation technologies and paradigms, and involve a wide (and ever growing) range of methods, tools, and technologies. They also cover a broad spectrum of vertical domains, industry segments, and even governments. Extended versions of the best papers will be considered for publishing in a nother special issue of the International Journal of Business Process Integration and Management (IJBPIM) in the following year. Editors: Juan R. Rabual, Julin Dorado & Alejandro Pazos. tic.encyclopedia.ai at udc.es http://sabia.tic.udc.es/encyclopediaAI/ We have received more than 200 proposals and we want to thank all contributors, for the work and for the confidence in the success of this project. We have organized the received articles in 20 topics. We have not received enough submissions in 5 of these topics, for that reason we propose a new call of articles for these 5 topics: -- Knowledge Engineering (Expert Systems) -- Ontologies -- Ambient Intelligence and Ubiquitous -- Natural Language Processing -- Robotics *************************************************************************** IMPORTANT NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE - ONLY 5 TOPICS April 4, 2007 - RECEIVE PROPOSALS FOR ARTICLES *************************************************************************** ** Introduction Nature has always been a source of inspiration for science problem solving.Areas such as Pharmacy, Physics or Aeronautics use biological concepts toreach beyond their current limits. As far as Computing Science - and more specifically, Artificial Intelligence (AI) - is concerned, the use of biological concepts is highly reliable for achieving good results. At the early stages of AI (1950s), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) - quite successful as classification and pattern recognition systems - were developed by using the structure of the nervous system as a basis. After these systems, biology has inspired the development of other techniques - among which the evolutionary systems are the most promising ones when dealing with new problems that use a vast amount of data - such asBiomedical Computing or weather forecasting. Both the techniques based in cell or natural organisms performance, as well as those based on evolutionary theories, have a wide success record when applied to real problems. These types of techniques currently represent a very active area of research, as not only a high number of companies use them, but also many related high level scientific congresses are being held annually on these techniques. ** Coverage To meet this need, currently we are in the process of editing the "Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence " that will provide comprehensive coverage and definitions of the most important issues, concepts, trends and technologies in Artificial Intelligence. This important new publication will be distributed worldwide among academic and professional institutions and will be instrumental in providing researchers, scholars, students and professionals with access to the latest knowledge related to Artificial Intelligence techniques. To ensure that this publication has the most current and relevant coverage of all topics related to Artificial Intelligence, we are asking scholars well-known for their particular area of research, to contribute short articles of 1,500-3,500 words on any of the above topics. ** Submission Procedure We would like to invite you to consider submitting a proposal on any of the above topics for this upcoming encyclopedia by submitting a brief (75-100 words) description of your proposed topic to us by no later than April 4, 2007. You will then have until May 31, 2007 to prepare your full submission (1,500-3,500 words in length) and 7-10 related terms and their appropriate definitions. A copy of a sample article and terms with definitions can be found at http://sabia.tic.udc.es/encyclopediaAI/ All submitted articles will undergo a double-blind, peer-review process upon its receipt. We also invite you to visit the site http://sabia.tic.udc.es/encyclopediaAI/ for additional information about this publication. Please forward your proposal to Juan R. Rabual, Julin Dorado & Alejandro Pazos, editors, at tic.encyclopedia.ai at udc.es. This book is tentatively scheduled for publishing by Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), www.idea-group.com/reference, (an imprint of Idea Group Inc.) in 2008. IMPORTANT DEADLINES April 4, 2007 - Receive proposals for articles April 12, 2007 - Notification of accepted proposals May 31, 2007 - Full articles due If you have any questions or concerns, or if we can be of any assistance, please let us know. TCBR applies the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) problem-solving methodology to situations where experiences are predominantly captured in text form. The theme of the workshop is 'Textual Case-Based Reasoning: Beyond Retrieval'. We invite submissions of two types: - Research and application papers; and - Papers that address the workshop challenge. Submission topics for research and application papers ----------------------------------------------------- We particularly welcome contributions that explore approaches that address the workshop theme. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Textual case authoring (e.g. from the Web, from semi-structured documents). - Adaptation of textual cases. - Explanation in TCBR. - Maintenance of textual case bases. - The relationship between textual CBR and related technologies, such as text mining, question-answering, dialogue systems, and human-language technology. - Approaches to multilingual TCBR, mixed content types (e.g. text and images) and collective TCBR. - Automated extraction of textual knowledge sources (e.g. cases, similarity measures, thesauruses, lexicons, taxonomies, ontologies & folksonomies). - Testing, evaluation, analysis and visualisation methods for TCBR. - Conversational TCBR. - TCBR case studies. Papers that address the workshop challenge ------------------------------------------ We encourage all potential workshop participants, individually or as a research group, to submit a short paper that addresses the workshop challenge (described below). Submission of a research or application paper (above) does not preclude submission of a workshop challenge paper. Accepted challenge papers will appear in the workshop proceedings, along with research and application papers. Short presentations of the accepted challenge papers at the workshop will form the basis for workshop discussions. The challenge that we propose consists in analysing the corpus of Air Investigation Reports available from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. The reports are ordered by year and are available in English and French at: http://www.tsb.gc.ca/en/reports/ http://www.tsb.gc.ca/fr/reports/ Investigation reports are created by human experts to describe system malfunctions or procedural errors, in this case in Canadian air traffic. They are written in natural language, but may also contain images referenced from the text. They mostly share a common structure; most frequently, they are divided into sections such as Summary, Analysis, Safety Actions, and so on. Imagine that you are to use this corpus to build a TCBR system that supports human investigators. A TCBR system might support the investigators in tasks such as the following: - authoring a new investigation report; - proposing safety actions in response to a new incident; - discovering recurring unsolved problems. A non-exhaustive list of the difficulties to be overcome in building such a TCBR system includes: - the free-form vocabulary, the length of the documents, and the likelihood that section headers may not accurately describe section content; - multilingual support (English and French), and multimedia support (text and images); - possible obsolescence of cases due to, e.g., changes in aircraft manufacture, in airport infrastructure, or in policies and legal requirements. You might like to submit, for example, a 2 or 3 page paper that describes some of the problems in more detail; or a 3 or 4 page paper that proposes ways of overcoming some of these problems; or a 4 or 5 page paper that reports actual experience in addressing the problems (perhaps using the jColibri framework). We particularly welcome contributions that address the workshop theme ('Beyond Retrieval'). Format and submission --------------------- Papers of both types should be submitted in Springer LNCS format, which is the format required for the final camera ready copy, subject to the following page limits: - a maximum of 10 pages for research and application papers; and - a maximum of 5 pages for papers that address the workshop challenge. Authors' instructions along with LaTeX and Word macro files are available on the web at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html Accepted papers will appear in the Workshop Proceedings. We also plan to edit a special issue of a journal with extended versions of a selection of the accepted contributions. Instructions for submission can be found on the workshop web site. FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS ********************************************* Eleventh International Workshop on Cooperative Information Agents (CIA 2007) September 19 - 21, 2007 Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands ********************************************* http://www.dfki.de/~klusch/cia2007 Co-sponsored by TU Delft ICT Research Whitestein Technologies, Switzerland IEEE FIPA ------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES Submission of papers: MARCH 26, 2007 Notification of authors: May 29, 2007 Camera-ready papers: June 15, 2007 ------------------------------------------- AIMS & SCOPE ============ An intelligent information agent is a computational software entity that is capable of accessing one or multiple, heterogeneous and distributed information sources, proactively searching for, mediating, and maintaining relevant information or services on behalf of its human users, or other agents, at any time and anywhere. One key challenge of the development of intelligent and cooperative information system is to balance the autonomy of networked data, information, and knowledge sources with the potential payoff of leveraging them by the appropriate use of such agents. Research on intelligent information agents and systems is inherently cross disciplinary covering themes from domains such as artificial intelligence, HCI, Internet and Web technologies, information systems, information retrieval, P2P and grid computing, pervasive computing, and multiagent system technologies as well. The objective of the international workshop series on cooperative information agents (CIA), since its establishment in 1997, is to provide a small but distinguished, interdisciplinary forum for researchers, programmers, and managers to get informed about, present, and discuss latest high quality results in research and development of agent-based intelligent and cooperative information systems, and applications for the Internet and Web. INVITED SPEAKERS ================ To be announced. TOPICS ====== Topics of interest are but not exclusive: Systems and Applications of Information Agents Architectures of information agents. SUBMISSION ========== For preparation of (camera-ready) papers to be submitted please follow the instructions for authors available at the Springer LNCS Web page: http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html For those not using the Springer LNCS style files: The paper must be formatted in A4 size using 10 point Times. (If Times is not available, please use one of the similar fonts widely used in phototypesetting.) Printing area should be 12.2 x 19.3 cm, and the interline distance should be arranged in such a way that some 42 to 45 lines occur on a full-text page. The length of each paper should not exceed 15 pages. All papers must be written in English. Please submit your paper online at http://www.easychair.org/CIA2007 In case of problems, please contact us immediately for assistance! Submission of full paper including all figures and references is either in POSTSCRIPT or PDF format only. In any case, please check whether the file is really printable on a postscript-level-2 printer before submitting it. Double Submission Policy ------------------------ CIA 2007 will not accept papers which have already been published, or accepted for publication. However, these restrictions apply ONLY to journals, NOT to conferences, workshops, or symposia. Though, full copies of papers that are published elsewhere are, of course, not acceptable; there have to be significant modifications. Papers not conforming to the above requirements may be rejected without review. Submissions will be reviewed for quality, correctness, sufficient originality, and relevance. STUDENT SUPPORT =============== There will be limited financial support provided to a limited number of students as (co-)authors of accepted papers to present their work at the CIA 2007 workshop. AWARDS ====== The CIA 2007 workshop issues both a BEST PAPER award, and a SYSTEM INNOVATION award to acknowledge and honor highly innovative research and development, respectively, in the area of intelligent information agents for the Internet and Web. The prize money is 300 euros. The CIA 2007 SYSTEM INNOVATION AWARD is sponsored by Whitestein Technologies. The prize money is 500 euros. Nominations for the CIA 2007 SYSTEM INNOVATION AWARD are eligible either by means of regular paper submission, or external explicit request for nomination by submitting a brief (max. 4 pages, 10pt Times) description of the system in terms of its core functionalities, main techniques used to implement them, and (publicly available reference to) experimental results, as well as a summary of the innovative features in comparison to other existing systems. After confidential voting by the PC, chairs, and sponsors of the award the top ranked nominees will be requested to demonstrate a running prototype of their system at the workshop to all participants and the jury for a final public voting. The prize money is 500 euros. Both awards will be given at the end of the workshop. It seems to be serious, however there's not enough information to confirm this. The page does not even list organizers. Did you ever hear about such an event? It seems to have something with CIC-IPN (http://www.cic.ipn.mx/), what seems to be a kind of Institute for Informatics of some academy of sciences of Mexico. Well, I just cannot judge on this one...
