From uvgotsaif at gmail.com Mon Aug 4 05:08:55 2014 From: uvgotsaif at gmail.com (Saif Mohammad) Date: Sun, 3 Aug 2014 23:08:55 -0400 Subject: First Joint Call for Workshops Proposals: NAACL 2015 & ACL 2015 & EMNLP 2015 Message-ID: [Apologies for cross-postings.] CALL FOR PROPOSALS First Joint Call for Workshops Proposals: NAACL 2015 & ACL 2015 & EMNLP 2015 (21 July 2014) The North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL), the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), and the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with NAACL 2015, ACL 2015, or EMNLP 2015. We solicit proposals on any topic of interest to the ACL communities. Workshops will be held at one of the following conference venues: NAACL 2015 is the Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL). It will be held in Denver, Colorado May 31 - June 5. The NAACL workshops will be held on June 4-5. The webpage for NAACL 2015 is: *http://naacl.org/naacl2015 *. ACL 2015 is the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics. It will be held in Beijing, China, August 15-20, 2015. The dates for the ACL workshops will be August 20-21: http://acl2015.org/. EMNLP 2015 is the SIGDAT conference on Empirical Methods for Natural Language Processing (EMNLP). It started in 1993 with the series ofWorkshops on Very Large Corpora and was renamed EMNLP in 1996. The main conference will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, September 17-21, 2015. The dates for the EMNLP workshops are still not definitive, most likely they will be September 17 and September 21. Proposals will be reviewed jointly by the Workshop Co-Chairs of the three conferences. SUBMISSION INFORMATION Proposals for workshops should contain: 1. A title and brief (2-page max) description of the workshop topic and content. 2. The desired workshop length (one or two days) and an estimate of the number of attendees. 3. The names, postal addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of the organizers, with one-paragraph statements of their research interests and areas of expertise. 4. A list of Program Committee members, with an indication of which members have already agreed. It is highly desirable for proposals to have at least 75% of the Program Committee reviewers confirmed at the time of the submission. Organizers should do their best to estimate the number of submissions (especially for recurring workshops) in order to (a) ensure a sufficient number of reviewers so that each paper receives 3 reviews, and (b) anticipate that no one is committed to reviewing more than 2 papers. This practice is likely to ensure on-time, and more thorough and thoughtful reviews. Submissions should essentially be ready to be turned into a Call for Workshop Papers within one week of notification (see Timelines). 5. A description of any shared tasks associated with the workshop. 6. A description of special requirements for technical needs. 7. A note specifying which venue(s) (NAACL/ACL/EMNLP) would be acceptable and/or preferable. Workshop co-chairs will review the quality of the workshop proposals. Once the reviews are complete, the workshop co-chairs will work together to assign workshops to the three conferences, taking into account the location preferences and constraints provided by the workshop proposers. The ACL has a set of policies on workshops. You can find the ACL's general policies on workshops at http://www.cis.udel.edu/~carberry/ACL/Workshops/workshop -support-general-policy.html , the financial policy for workshops at http://www.cis.udel.edu/~carberry/ACL/Workshops/workshop -conf-financial-policy.html , and the financial policy for SIG workshops at http://www.cis.udel.edu/~carberry/ACL/Workshops/workshops -Sig-financial-policy.html . Proposals may be submitted as Plain text, MS Word, or PDF documents (preferably PDF). Proposals should be attached and emailed to theworkshop organizers (naacl.acl.emnlp.w15 at gmail.com) no later than 18 October 2014, Samoa Standard Time (SST) (UTC/GMT-11). You should receive a confirmation of proposal receipt within 24 hours. If you do not, please get in touch with Sebastian Riedel:s.riedel at ucl.ac.uk Notification of acceptance of workshop proposals will occur no later than 2 November 2014. Organizers of accepted proposals will be responsible for publicizing and running the workshop, including reviewing submissions, producing the camera ready workshop proceedings, and organizing the meeting days. It is crucial that organizers commit to all deadlines. In particular, failure to produce the camera ready proceedings on time will lead to the exclusion of the workshop from the CD-ROM/USB & unified author indexes.Workshop organizers cannot accept for publication papers that will be (or have been) published elsewhere, although they are free to set their own policies on simultaneous submission and review. Since the conferences will occur at different times, the timescales for the submission and reviewing of workshop papers, and the preparation of camera-ready copies, will be different for each conference. Suggested timescales for each of the conferences are given below. Workshop organizers should not deviate from this schedule unless absolutely necessary. Conf. on Social Intelligence (ECSI-2014) Message-ID: <7e79-53ec5880-1bd-4c3e5700@143438834> 2nd CFP: European Conference on Social Intelligence (ECSI-2014) http://ecsi.sintelnet.eu Barcelona, November 3-5, 2014 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Cristiano Castelfranchi (ISTC-CNR Rome) Christian List (LSE London) Mel Slater (ICREA, University of Barcelona and University College London) MOTIVATION AND OBJECTIVES Social intelligence is a general term at the intersection between different disciplines including philosophy, social science - sociology, economics, legal science, etc. - and computer science. Broadly speaking, social intelligence is the capacity to understand others and to act rationally and emotionally in relations with others. This is an ability that not only human but also artificial agents have, as modelled in artificial intelligence and agent-based research in particular. The interactions between philosophy, social sciences and computer science around social intelligence are manifold, and many concepts and theories from social science have found their way into artificial intelligence and agent-based research. In the latter, coordination and cooperation between largely independent, autonomous computational entities are modelled. Conversely, logical and computational models and their implementations have been used in the social sciences to help improve simulations, hypotheses and theories. Among the most prominent subjects at the interface are action and agency, communicative interaction, group attitudes, socio-technical epistemology and social coordination. The aim of the European Network for Social Intelligence (SINTELNET, 2011-2014) is to help build a shared perspective at the intersection of the above fields, to identify challenges and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration, to provide guidelines for research and policy-making and to kindle partnerships among participants. The aim of the European Conference on Social Intelligence is to provide a productive meeting ground for researchers from the above fields. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Action and agency - Mental attitudes (e.g., beliefs, desires, goals, intentions) - Dynamics of mental attitudes (at individual and collective level) - Argumentation theory - Cooperation and coordination - Social epistemology and ontology - Epistemic game theory - Theory of signalling - Norms and normative systems - Group attitudes, collective reasoning, collective intentionality - Theories of artefacts and technical design - Socio-technical systems - Trust and reputation - Speech act theory - Epistemic and evolutionary aspects of conventions - Emotions and affective phenomena - Social influence - Social power and social dependence Submissions should have a forward-looking perspective that contributes to the objectives of the symposium. Challenging position papers are specially welcome. The technicality of the papers should take the mixed audience into consideration. Selection for the symposium and subsequent publication will be based on the possibility of fruitful discussions and the quality of the arguments put forward. SUBMISSION FORMAT Submissions should be formatted using Springer's LNCS style (http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Please submit via the online paper submission system Easychair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ecsi2014). Papers should be preferably within 12 pages in length. Submissions should present unpublished work. PUBLICATION Accepted papers will be published as CEUR proceedings. Extended selected papers will be invited to a special issue of one or more relevant journals and/or to a book. IMPORTANT DATES Paper submission deadline: September 3, 2014. The program is intended primarily for junior authors who have not previously published an Artificial Intelligence and Law paper at a conference or in a journal. If you would like help with your submission, you may ask for a mentor ― a person who will help you with your submission to the IAAIL audience through one-on-one advising, usually via e-mail. A mentor can also familiarize you with the standards and deadlines of ICAIL submissions. Mentors are volunteers familiar with successful submissions. To request a mentor, please send email by the Mentoring Program Request Deadline to the organizers: Guido Governatori, Guido.Governatori at nicta.com.au; Burkhard Schafer, b.schafer at ed.ac.uk; and John Zeleznikow,John.Zeleznikow at vu.edu.au. Please include: • Your name and the names of your co-authors; • The name of your school (or department) and institution; • A plain-text description of your work (a title and abstract is a minimum requirement); • Any specific questions or areas in which you would like help; • But don’t include your draft paper Reasonable expectations for a mentor include the following. A mentor may be able to advise you about the most appropriate forum for your work, suggest improvements to your submission, suggest how to deal with language problems, or refer you to relevant research of which you might not have been aware. Typically, a mentor might spend 3-7 hours on a submission. We carefully match mentors to mentees, and wish to support you in developing your work into a high-quality submission with a good chance of being accepted and published. Note the following: • People requesting mentoring must have a complete draft ready for the mentor to review by the Mentoring Program Paper Deadline; • If there is an experienced AI & Law-related researcher in your department, it is expected that you would approach her/him first; • No notification of mentor/mentee assignments will be made until after the Mentoring Program Paper Deadline; • Reviewers will not be informed of whether a paper has been mentored. That is, the fact that a paper was mentored is not considered during the paper selection process. Their computer-based processing, integration, as well as their conceptual foundation and application presents ever new challenges to existing methods of knowledge representation, data bases, and data analysis. In the life sciences, enormous data sets are being produced in connection with biological and medical experiments, aiming to unravel biological interconnections for a better understanding in order to offer patients the best possible therapies. Data management and data processing in the life sciences ranges from the best possible integration and usage of distributed, heterogeneous data to the best possible obfuscation of medical data. This integrated workshop covers the overall spectrum of biomedical information processing, from experimental data acquisition and data management, across analysis, structuring and interpretation of data, up to the development of structures of knowledge in the form of ontologies with their various applications. The workshop pursues the aim to gather scientists that work in these fields in order to exchange ideas, to discuss new results and to inspire collaborations. The work- shop has an interdisciplinary character. It fosters the collaboration between ontologists, computer scientists, bio-informaticians, medical information scientists, applied logicians, as well as the cooperation with physicians, bio-chemists, and biometricians. Organization ------------ Martin Boeker, University of Freiburg (general & local chair) Ludger Jansen, University of Muenster (PC chair) Heinrich Herre, University of Leipzig (speaker of OBML) Frank Loebe, University of Leipzig ODLS 2014 is associated with the group Ontologies in Medicine and Life Sciences (OBML) [7] within the German Informatics Society (GI), and it is a Supported Event of the International Association for Ontology and Its Applications (IAOA) [4]. Amounts of data of ever increasing scale are now handled and processed, either in form of datasets published on the Web or in form of sensor data streams. The challenge to deal with the contextual nature of this data is therefore brought to an unprecedented scale; however, also increasing opportunities arise to build novel applications combining and reusing semantic data across domains, depending on the ability to deal with the problems associated with context and data contextuality. The ARCOE-Logic workshop aims to provide a dedicated forum for the researchers to discuss recent developments, important open issues and future directions in the area of contextual knowledge representation and knowledge management. -- Topics -- ARCOE-Logic welcomes submissions on the topics below as well as on their intersection and other topics related to acquisition, representation, reasoning with context and its applications. A non-exclusive list of specific topics follows: * Formal aspects of context acquisition, representation and interpretation. * Matching, combining and disambiguating knowledge sources via contextual information. * Contextual search and information retrieval. * Modelling of user's, agent's, and application's context. * Ontologies for modeling and reasoning about contextual information. * Effective reasoning with contextual knowledge. * Exploiting context in inconsistency and uncertainty handling. * Distributed evaluation of contexts. * Tools and methodologies for handling context. * Representing context in Semantic Web standards and enriching Linked Data with contextual information. * Applications of contextual knowledge representation and reasoning in frame of the Semantic Web and beyond. * Evolution of SW/LD and other knowledge resources in changing contexts. -- Submission Requirements -- Submission of regular and position papers is possible. Regular papers are intended for research reports and surveys. ARCOE-Logic also welcomes reports on significant work in progress which has already achieved some interesting partial results, as well as papers recently submitted or published elsewhere as long as their topic is in line with the workshop. Regular papers should not exceed 12 pages in length including references. Position papers are intended for presentation of interesting new open issues and challenges, and opinions on the status of the field. Position papers are limited to 6 pages including references. All papers must be formatted using the Springer LNCS style: http://www.springer.com/comp/lncs/Authors.html and submitted in PDF format via EasyChair using: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=arcoelogic2014 All submitted papers will be subject to blind (but not double-blind) peer-review process. Accepted papers will be presented either as oral presentations or as posters, depending on the choice of the program committee. However, all accepted papers will be included in the Working Notes in their full form. For the first time ARCOE-Logic 2014 will have the workshop notes published either via CEUR-WS.org or via Archive.org. -- Workshop Co-Chairs -- * Michael Fink, Vienna University of Technology, Austria * Martin Homola, Comenius University of Bratislava, Slovakia * Alessandra Mileo, INSIGHT Centre for Data Analytics, National University of Ireland -- Steering Committee -- * Alan Bundy, University of Edinburgh, UK * Thomas Eiter, Vienna University of Technology, Austria * Luciano Serafini, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy -- Resources -- ARCOE-Logic 2014 website: http://www.arcoe.org/2014/ ARCOE workshop series: http://www.arcoe.org/ EasyChair submission site: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=arcoelogic2014 EKAW 2014 website: http://www.ida.liu.se/conferences/EKAW14/home.html Enquiries about the ARCOE workshop: arcoe [at] arcoe [dot] org From pascal.hitzler at wright.edu Sun Aug 24 02:27:30 2014 From: pascal.hitzler at wright.edu (Pascal Hitzler) Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2014 20:27:30 -0400 Subject: CfP: C4BD2014 - Workshop on Complexity for Big Data at IEEE BigData 2014 Message-ID: <53F93172.9020202@wright.edu> CALL FOR PAPERS C4BD2014 Workshop on COMPLEXITY FOR BIG DATA Workshop at IEEE BigData 2014, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. 27th, 28th, 29th, or 30th of October 2014 (to be determined) http://www.pascal-hitzler.de/C4BD2014/ [extended paper deadline:September 14, 2014] Complexity will lead to both big challenges and opportunities in big data research. Complexity in big data can be caused by many factors, including: * large number of features, which are related to each other through a rich variety of relationships ranging from simple to complicated; * a large number of heterogeneous dimensions, which offer a variety of kinds of insights and require different treatments, in addition to a large number of data records; * a large variety of heterogeneous types, such as vectors, sequences, (labeled) graphs, images, and multimedia, in addition to a large number of instances; * a rich set of logical, semantic, and ontological relationships. Complexity has often been used to successfully characterize various kinds of complicated subjects, for example in computational complexity, descriptive complexity, Kolmogorov complexity. Since big data have many complicated parts with intricate relationships to each other, the study of complexity for big data has potential to be highly successful. Research on complexity of big data needs to consider the following facts, among others: * Big data can be used for different purposes such as data integration, cross domain fertilization, and data mining; * Structures among various parts of big data can be explicit or hidden, and can be described using a rich variety of patterns and models. The Complexity for Big Data workshop is intended to create an atmosphere of exchange of ideas, providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of the key topics related to Big Data Complexity, including (but not limited to): * new concepts for complexity for Big Data * new techniques for handling complexity for Big Data * analysis of complex relationships * type logic acquisition * scalability of type logic reasoning * dealing with semantic heterogeneity * dimensionality-reduction techniques * query and search over multiple data silos * capture and use of provenance information * analysis of similarity and differences among heterogeneous parts SUBMISSION Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit original papers that have not been submitted for review or published elsewhere. Submitted papers must be written in English and should not exceed 9 pages (IEEE BigData Conference foramt) in the case of research and experience papers, or 5 pages in the case of position papers (including figures, bibliography and appendices). All submitted papers will be judged based on their relevance, originality, significance, technical quality and organisation. Papers must be submitted through easychair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=c4bd. PRESENTATION Selected papers will be presented during the workshop. The workshop will include extra time for discussion of the presentation allowing the group to have a better understanding of the issues, challenges, and ideas being presented. Notification of acceptance: October 1, 2014. Camera ready version: October 15, 2014. Conference: November 3-5, 2014. Providing knowledge engineers and data analysts with visualizations and well-designed user interfaces can significantly support understanding of the concepts, data instances and relationships of different domains. The development of appropriate visualizations and user interfaces is a challenging task, given the size and complexity of the information that needs to be displayed and the varied backgrounds of the users. Further challenges emerge from technological developments and diverse application contexts. There is no "one size fits all" solution but the various use cases demand different visualization and interaction techniques. Ultimately, providing better visualizations and user interfaces will foster user engagement and likely lead to higher-quality results in different areas of knowledge engineering and linked data analytics. This full-day workshop will be divided into two half-day tracks, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, each focusing on one of the two workshop themes. Track 1: Visualizations and User Interfaces for Knowledge Engineering ========== Visualizations and user interfaces are an integral part of knowledge engineering. They help to bridge the gap between domain experts and data management, and are essential to handle the increasing diversity of knowledge that is being modeled in ontologies, ensuring that it is easily accessible to a wide community. As knowledge-based systems and ontologies grow in size and complexity, the demand for comprehensive visualization and optimized interaction also rises. A number of knowledge visualizations have become available in recent years, with some being already well-established, particularly in the field of ontology development. In other areas of knowledge engineering, such as ontology alignment and debugging, although several tools have recently been developed, few have a user interface, not to mention navigational aids or comprehensive visualization techniques. Other activities, such as data integration, rely on the relationships between the concepts of different ontologies, which not only multiplies the number of objects to be displayed but also compounds the problem with the portrayal of different kinds of relationships between concepts. Topics of interest in this track include (but are not limited to): - visualizations for (large and complex) ontologies - user interfaces for ontology alignment and debugging - visualizations and user interfaces for non-experts - applications of novel interaction techniques (e.g. touch and gesture interaction) - user interfaces for mobile knowledge engineering - requirements analysis for visualizations in knowledge engineering - user interfaces assisting people with disabilities - knowledge visualizations for large displays and high resolutions - user interfaces for collaborative knowledge engineering - case studies of applying visualizations in knowledge engineering - user interfaces and visualizations for linked data - context-aware visualization and interaction techniques Track 2: Visualizations and User Interfaces for Linked Data Analytics ========== New and traditional knowledge practices, digitization of organizational processes, high performance computing and affordable datastores create an unprecedented amount of data as a part of daily organizational activities, at break-neck speed in a variety of formats. Conventional systems struggle to capture, store and analyze such dynamic and large scale data continuously generated. On its own, raw data has little value, but its value and significance is only unleashed when the data is extracted, processed and interpreted. Visual Analytics attempts to address this challenge by harmoniously combining the strengths of human processing and electronic data processing. While semi-automated processes result in generating visualizations, humans can use visual processing and interactions to quickly identify trends, patterns and anomalies from large volumes of visual data. The growing challenges of analyzing big data, social media, linked data, and data streams have created an excellent opportunity for research in Visual Analytics. Topics of interest in this track include (but are not limited to): - interactive semantic systems - design of interactive systems - visual pattern discovery - (semi-)automatic hypothesis generation - augmented human reasoning - novel visualizations of data and metadata - visual approaches for semantic similarity measurement - exploratory information visualization - domain-specific visual analytics - interactive systems in business intelligence - cognition and sensemaking in visual contexts - evaluation of interactive systems Submission Guidelines ========== Paper submission and reviewing for this workshop will be electronic via EasyChair. The papers should be written in English, following Springer LNCS format, and be submitted in PDF. The following types of contributions are welcome: - Full research papers (8-12 pages); - Experience papers (8-12 pages); - Position papers (6-8 pages); - Short research papers (4-6 pages); - System papers (4-6 pages). Accepted papers will be published as a volume in the CEUR Workshop Proceedings series.
