Assistant Professor of Algorithmics
Faculty/Department: Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
Maximum employment: Maximum of 38 hours per week (1 FTE)
Duration of contract: Tenure track
Salary scale: €3195 to €4970 per month gross
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. The faculty offers an interdisciplinary setting for its 500 employees, 350 PhD students and 1700 undergraduates. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics. EEMCS: Your Connection to the Future.
The Department of Software and Computer Technology comprises the EEMCS Faculty research groups working on core computer science and engineering topics. The department is responsible for a large part of the curriculum of the BSc and MSc programmes in Computer Science as well as the MSc programmes in Computer Engineering and Embedded Systems. The department’s research mission is to perform excellent research at an internationally recognised level in the design, construction and analysis of complex, concurrent and cooperative computer and information systems. Inspiration for the research topics is derived largely from technical ICT problems in industry and society. The department currently consists of the following groups: Software Engineering, Parallel and Distributed Systems, Computer Engineering, Embedded Software, Algorithmics, and Web Information Systems.
Algorithmics is a core area of computer science concerned with the design, analysis and implementation of problem-solving methods that can be executed on computer systems. The research of the Algorithmics group focuses on coordination algorithms for distributed systems in dynamic environments, design of solvers for real-life combinatorial problems, and empirical evaluation of algorithms. Application areas for the research are traffic and transportation, energy, and maintenance.
Job description
The candidate’s primary responsibilities include conducting research in the field of solvers for combinatorial problems, assisting in the supervision of PhD students in the field, acquiring external research funding, teaching and developing new education at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Computer Science, and performing department and university management tasks. Important topics of research include, but are not limited to, the development of solvers for combinatorial problems occurring in energy distribution systems, especially smart grids, and distributed transportation systems. We expect the applicant to actively collaborate with other researchers from academia as well as industry to realise this ambition.
Requirements
The successful candidate has obtained a PhD in the research field, has proven knowledge and experience in the field, preferably demonstrated through a strong publication record, and is an enthusiastic team player with the ambition to strengthen and expand the research of the Algorithmics chair/group. The candidate has experience in providing education at the university level and the ability to obtain research funding through the acquisition of national or international research projects.
Conditions of employment
This is a full-time, tenure-track position. The starting salary of the Assistant Professor, depending on age and experience, varies from scale 11 to 12 with a maximum of €4,970 gross per month.
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home (with a contract of two years or longer), and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
