Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship in Computer Science and Engineering

Departments of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering
University of Bath

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to research issues in
the intersection of service-oriented architectures and engineering
design utilizing technology from web services, work-flow enactment,
semantic web and multi-criteria optimization.

PROJECT AIM: To contribute to the creation of a multi-fidelity
multi-disciplinary optimisation environment for aircraft design. The
precise focus of the work will depend on the background of the
successful candidate, but will involve application of semantic web
technology, adaptation of e-Science technology and development of
tools to support multi-disciplinary optimisation, with application to
aerospace engineering to enable the exploration of, for example,
structural and aero-elasticity design requirements.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: The successful applicant will have, or be
expecting, a First Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) in computer
science or aerospace/mechanical engineering or applied mathematics.
He/she must be a competent programmer (Java, C, but able to pick up
other languages as required) and have some knowledge of numerical
methods (facility with Matlab). In addition, he/she must offer
excellent communication and team working skills appropriate to an
interdisciplinary project.

FINANCES: Tuition fees (at home/EU level) and stipend of £12940/year
(tax-free) are provided by the studentship, funded by the University
of Bath in the context of the EPSRC “Bridging the Gaps between
mathematics, ICT and Engineering” initiative. Overseas (non European
Union) applicants must be able to fund the home/overseas differential
(approx £9000 at this time) themselves. The studentship is for 3
years and should start in October 2009, or as soon as possible
thereafter.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND DEADLINES: Suitable candidates are invited
to complete the downloadable PhD application form available at
www.bath.ac.uk/grad-office/. To speed application processing, please
ensure that a copy is also sent to PG admissions Computer Science
(mdv at cs.bath.ac.uk). For informal enquiries and further details
please contact Dr. H Alicia Kim (h.a.kim at bath.ac.uk or Dr. Julian
Padget (j.a.padget at bath.ac.uk). The application cut-off date is 15th
September 2009 at which time all applications received will be
considered, but late applications will be considered until the
position is filled.
